AT&T outage disrupts some 911 calls as tens of thousands lose service
AT&T said it has restored about three-quarters of its wireless network after tens of thousands of customers lost service overnight in cities across the country, leading to frustration and concern about outages in emergency call processing.
Outages reported by down detector.com suddenly increased from a handful around 3:30 a.m. ET on Thursday to peaking at more than 73,000 around 8:20 a.m. ET. However, by late morning, the number of reports on the site appeared to be declining.
"This morning, some of our customers experienced an outage in wireless service," AT&T said in a statement emailed to NPR at 11:30 a.m. ET. "Our network teams took immediate action and so far Approximately three-quarters of the network has been restored. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to our remaining customers.
DownDetector previously reported that Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago, Indianapolis, New York, Miami and Charlotte reported the most outages.
