Walid Regragui: Mbappe abandons Algeria for France, and the Moroccan star chooses Spain
Walid Regragui, the national coach of the Moroccan national team, confirmed that Kylian Mbappe had chosen to represent France.
It is realistic, although he could have played for Algeria or Cameroon by virtue of the original nationality of his parents, according to media reports.
Walid Regragui gave an interview to the Spanish newspaper El País, while he was in Madrid with the Moroccan national team, in order to face Peru in a friendly match.
Where Walid Regragui commented: Choosing a country over another does not mean failure, it is just an expression of feeling. For example, Emeric Laporte's decision to play with Spain is not a failure for France.
Walid Regragui added: "Why didn't Mbappe play with Cameroon or Algeria, and chose France? In my opinion, it is natural for a person to choose the country in which he was raised."
Walid Regragui continued his meeting with the player Ibrahim Diaz, who can play for Morocco or Spain, saying: "He will be 23 years old, and I asked him to decide whether to play for Morocco or Spain, but he preferred to represent the Spanish national team."
Walid Regragui had met Diaz in Milan on February 16, 2023, two days after Milan's victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Champions League final price.
Walid Regragui led the Moroccan national team to achieve fourth place in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, in an unprecedented Arab and African achievement. The coach commented on this by saying: "In fact, organizing the World Cup in an Arab country made us feel at home. This made things much easier for us."
He explained, "The players realized that they should be collective and not individual in playing. In fact, we had great players in the 2018 World Cup, but we lacked confidence and faith."
During the interview,Walid Regragui touched on his training method and his beginnings in this field, saying: "I started training in 2012. I worked with Al-Fateh Al-Rabati for 5 years. It is true that he did not win a championship, but he started a new project after relegation to the second degree."
And he continued, "I worked there with very educated people who wanted to change the mentality of football in Morocco. The president of the federation gave me full confidence and told me: Walid, this is your team."
And Walid Regragui continued, "I played 3-5-2, then 4-3-3, and also 4-4-2. One day I was Guardiola and the next day Simeone."
He concluded: “I spent 4 years without seeing my family, I was looking for players and trying out game plans day and night, but our main work was to establish a project similar to the Barcelona or Ajax model based on Cruyff’s ideas.
And the legacy that Guardiola collected, which made Barcelona the best team in history, and then we won the league (season 2015-2016).”
