Before wearing red David Corenswet Superman surprised the audience alger news

Ryan Murphy's Hollywood star and main supporting player in The Politician gets ready to don his red Superman cape (and Clark Kent glasses) in James Gunn's new take on the Man of Steel, Superman: Legacy.

On Tuesday, Gunn, the film's director and co-president of DC Studios, announced Corenswet as Clark Kent, aka Kal-El, aka Superman opposite Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane. And not just because the guy looks like a younger version of former Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill.

First of all...he knows you think he looks like Henry Cavill

When Corenswet first appeared on The Politician, the internet was abuzz with his resemblance to then-Superman Cavill. It was something he was well aware of before social media started pointing it out and a contributing factor to his desire to play Man of Steel himself one day.

“I don't take on an official position,” Corenswet told EW in 2019, when asked if he thought there was a similarity between himself and the British actor. “I think that's the way to go. But that's what caught my eye. It really caught my eye before the internet got hold of me, and my ambition is definitely to play Superman.”

While he praised Cavill's take on the role, he expressed a desire to return to Superman's roots for a more lively take (a fact that seemed to establish itself in Gunn's early reporting on Superman: Legacy as an origin story focusing primarily on Clark Kent and Lois Lane's work for the Daily Planet).

"I'd like to see someone do a really optimistic reaction," he said. "I love Henry Cavill's dark, gritty movie. I'd like to see the next one be very bright and optimistic."

His love for Superman

Corenswet has always had a soft spot for Superman. "Superman is an amazing character, a classic American character," he told EW. "It was done right and it was done wrong. Time for another right one." Little did he know that the next person (hopefully to be correct) would be starring for him.

He adds, "The great thing about Superman is the thing that everyone says is the problem with the character, which is that he's invincible." “That's the most interesting thing adjacent to it. What a difficult situation for anyone to be in. There's a lot to dig into, dealing with the drama that's inherent in someone who doesn't have any issues and can't die.”

To be honest, we're not sure Corenswet doesn't have superpowers of his own given the appearance he made in a 2019 interview. He also suggested the idea of an origin story, with an equal focus on Lois Lane.

"You should start with Lois Lane," I suppose. "And then Superman could come in as a love interest."
